Nolan and Spielberg are Interstellar Together

Brace yourself, sci-fi fans, and forget about James Cameron and his Avatar. For Steven Spielberg is boldly going where most filmmakers go… into space. The L.A. Times has reported that the Bearded One will direct a sci-fi adventure called Interstellar. And the real exciting news is that Jonah Nolan, the other Nolan who wrote Memento, The Prestige, etc, is set to write the script.
Not too much is known of the story, but Dark Horizons mentions that it involves explores venturing into alternative/other dimensions via a wormhole. The script is to be based on the theories of theoretical physicist Kip Thorne (sounds like he should be ordering the Men in Black). Thorne is known for his continuing research on wormholes and quamtum fields, or so Wikipedia tells me. Though what this means in terms of a film is another Stargate/Sliders tale with a few “so Lorentzian wormholes do exist” and “so quantum fields do possess negative energy” phrases before blowing away the bug-eyed aliens.
Admittedly, I am mildly excited about this project. But it’s not for Nolan’s presence. I liked Memento as much as I disliked Batman Begins. Nolan has said that working with Spielberg is likegetting hit “by a meteorite made entirely of winning lottery tickets”. Er, isn’t this guy supposed to be a writer? But what I am looking forward to is Spielberg. Sure, he can be schmaltzy, with most of his movies having soppy endings, but besides its closing minutes, War of the Worlds was one of the most thrilling blockbusters in year. Spielberg can direct well in his sleep, and when he approaches stories that demand a massive scale (Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones), he usually makes something very entertaining. Unless Senor Spielbergo wets his pants with excitement, and drops the dead weight that Indiana Jones 4 will be, don’t expect to see Interstellar until at least 2009.
