Neil Jordan gets Sigur Ros keyboardist to score film

Neil Jordan has always been a strange sort. At times he can be a brilliantly distinctive director, helming such memorable and progressive films such as The Crying Game, The Butcher Boy, and the homoerotic Interview with the Vampire. Yet at other times he’s either a hack (The Brave One) or failing miserabely in his attempts to express (The Good Thief, Breakfast on Pluto). Despite this, his erratic quality still means that a new project can be an exciting one.

Jordan’s latest film is Ondine, a magical realist tale of an Irish fisherman who discovers a woman who may be a mermaid. It stars Colin Farrell and Stephen Rea. But the exciting news is that Jordan has hired Icelandic musician Kjartan Sveinsson to score the film. Sveinsson is the keyboardist for ambient post-rock band Sigur Ros, whose music is constantly being used for hope and melancholy in Idol shows around the world, not to mention the closing moments of Vanilla Sky, or the climax in The Life Aquatic. None of these films or shows have truly captured the majestic ambivalence of the band’s sound, which is both ecstatic and downbeat at the same time. But their music does feel cinematic to many. So it sounds like a great idea to have at least one quarter actually score a film. The music of Sigur Ros will also feature in the film. The film is in post production and should see a release sometime this year.
