That’s right, the National Board of Review, an elitist group of film academics and critics, announced its award for 2006 this week, all available here.
Interestingly, its best film was Letters from Iwo Jima. For the unaware, this is Clint Eastwood’s companion piece to this year’s Flags of Our Fathers. Both concern the same WWII battle, but Iwo Jima focuses on the Japanese perspective, rather than the yanks in Flags. It’s a fascinating idea, although with such mixed reviews of Flags, it’s hard to be too excited.
The NBR pulled no surprises in its other categories, such as naming Volver best foreign film. Now don’t get me wrong, it’s a good movie, but why do award ceremonies consider Almodovar to represent all of foreign cinema? There are other countries, let alone other capable Spanish directors (Julio Medem, to name one), and I’m sure some have made better films this year.
Award favourites turned up here too, with Forest Whitaker and Helen Mirren receiving accolade of their lead performances. And even old Scorsese got an award as best director for gangster flick The Departed. Might he win the Oscar? Well, every year I bet on the Oscars, and Marty has let me down too many times to rely on.
