After seeing the following video, I realized that paying for this movie was a good idea.

Romantic-comedy master Hugh Grant and Drew “I was in E.T.!” Barrymore team up for the year’s obligatory Valentine’s Day movie, Music And Lyrics. Grant plays Alex Fletcher, a member of an early 80’s music group who currently gets by doing solo shows on the state fair and amusement park circuit. Alex’s career is on the verge of resurrection when a fan-turned-international pop sensation wants to feature his lyrics and voice on her new single, accompanied by an appearance to open up her world tour.

There’s only one problem, he hasn’t written anything in fifteen years. Halfway into his five-day deadline he has hit a roadblock and is beginning to feel the pressure. His prayers are answered when his ‘plant girl’ calls in sick and sends her temporary replacement and aspiring writer, Sophie Fisher (Barrymore). Alex discovers Sophie’s talent and tries to persuade her to help him write the song that could make him a star again.

Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore have romantic chemistry that rivals…well, any other combination of Grant and a love interest. Whether it be Renée Zellweger, Julianne Moore, or any English actress that is never heard from again, Grant seems to always make the romance believable. In addition to that, he is insanely likeably in this and everything else he does. He’s like the new age Richard Gere. Men like watching him because of his sarcastic sense of humor, quick wit, and his overall way with the ladies. Women like watching him because he’s English, funny, and charming. The majority of the characters he plays fall in those categories. You can attribute that to severe type-casting.

Music And Lyrics turned out to be a delightful film with just the right mix of romance and humor, able to refrain from alienating any gender in the audience. The men laughed, the women cried, and the children wondered what happened when the screen faded out after every passionate kiss. I suggest seeing it before the Valentine’s Day novelty wears off.
