MPAA Rejects “Taxi to the Dark Side” One SheetDecember 19th, 2007 in Documentary, Movie News, Movies |
The MPAA has rejected the poster for Alex Gibney’s Oscar short-listed documentary, “Taxi to the Dark Side”, because its depiction of torture “is not suitable for all audiences.” At issue is the presence of a hooded prisoner being marched off into the horizon by two American soldiers.
The image is clearly meant to be provocative, but its more thoughtful than inflammatory in nature. It certainly isn’t as disgusting and revolting as some of the images presented int films like “Hostel” and “Saw”.
Mark Urman, ThinkFilm’s president, said that he intends to appeal the MPAA’s ruling. However, it is unlikely that the MPAA will change their decision. Perhaps in the future they should give more consideration to the film’s genre before making such ludicrous decisions. But that might make too much sense.

The MPAA is doing them a favor. With the hilarious abject failure of the spate of Hollywood’s anti-war message films this year, it makes sense for them to obfuscate the slanted message of the film in their marketing. Their complaints are disingenuous. If only someone would ban it! Then they’d really have something to spin.
