The film is set in 1939, starring Miss Guinevere Pettigrew (Frances McDormand), a middle-aged London governess who finds herself unfairly dismissed from her job. After attempting to get a new job, Pettigrew finds herself thrown into the glamorous and dizzying social world of the American actress and singer, Delysia Lafosse (Amy Adams). Soon she finds herself swept up into the middle of the high-society world, and by the end the day, discovers her own romantic destiny.
