Miami Vice DVD Review: Necessary Explosions

Miami ViceI liked Miami Vice better when it was called Bad Boys 2 with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. It’s pretty much the same thing, just with worse acting. I’ve always liked Colin Farrell and his movies (except SWAT) and Jamie Foxx was great in Ray, but they were not good in this movie. Not even a little. I didn’t see the theatrical release, so I don’t know if it was better or worse than the Special Edition Director’s Cut Commemorative Unrated version with extra footage that they are attempting to shove down our throats this holiday season. I can only assume it’s worse.

Now I have to admit, I didn’t really watch the TV show. I’ve been told that doesn’t matter anyway, because the only things that the show and movie have in common are the names and Michael Mann (the director). Miami Vice would be a way better movie if they just ditched the title and had two different actors for the lead. You know, I don’t think Don Johnson and Phillip Michael Thomas are doing anything important these days.

I will say this though, the storyline was rather good. The situations were believable as were the action. There weren’t any explosions that weren’t necessary or gunfights where no one was hit or sex scenes that had no impact on the movie. Nowadays, those three things just scream huge opening weekend, and that’s all they’re worried about.
