If you are depressed that Tony Soprano is gone from your life, you may want to tune into Meadowlands which airs on Showtime tonight at 10PM. But before you get all excited about a new New Jersey mob story on the scene, let me stop you. Meadowlands does not refer to the place in New Jersey, but rather, it is a fictional location in England. The place where Meadowlands was filmed is actually called Maidstone, and is located within the county of Kent.
Meadowlands is a collaborative effort between BBC and Showtime, and if their efforts are anywhere near as good as the BBC/HBO team that made the hit series Rome, we’re in for a treat. Those of you who’d prefer to catch the season 4 premiere episode of HBO’s Entourage tonight, instead of tuning in for Meadowlands on Showtime, are in luck. They’ve already put the first complete episode online for viewing, and the on-demand version of the show should be available tomorrow.
The new series focuses on the Brogan family, who we find out are trying to escape something in their past. But at the same time, they are are busy confronting an even more uncertain future. The series begins with Danny and Evelyn Brogan, as well as their two teenage children (Zoe & Mark), as they enter a witness protection program and move to a more rural, pastoral neighborhood called “Meadowlands.” But as the family soon finds out, this isn’t just some quaint little town, and their neighbors are a little more weird than normal.
The Brogans learn that everyone in the town is also in the witness protection program, so as long as they stay in the town, and listen to their advisers (who occassionally meddle and chime in from the outside world), everything’s pretty safe… from the outside world that is. It’s the people in the town that the Brogans have to worry about. With a population featuring mysterious and often unsavory pasts, there is certainly a lot of danger and bizarre behavior within the town limits.
Could Meadowlands be the next great family drama to fill the void left by the Sopranos‘ departure? I wouldn’t go so far as to say that yet, but I’ll give it a chance. We’ll just have to wait and see…

Channeling my inner Spade: I liked it the first time I saw it when it was called “My Blue Heaven”.

I have been watching Meadowlands, since its debut and I find it to be a great series. I can hardly wait for the next episode to come on each week. I am a faithful Soprano series watcher, Thank goodness this show was added, it is terrific and very unusual.
