Lost Finds Its Way Again

February 8th, 2007 in TV

Jack gets to work…I was deadly serious yesterday when I threatened Lost. Like an experienced hostage taker I made eight demands that I wanted met to sustain my loyalty to the show.

Obviously someone at ABC was listening, because even though I only posted my demands four hours before the show aired, they made the necessary changes and met some (but not all) of my requirements.

(WARNING: spoilery stuff lurks below…)

1. Resolve that cliff-hanger. Don’t be one of those shows that returns to the moment of suspense, only to go off in a completely different direction. No one likes that.

Yes - Cliffhanger resolved, but also used as a plot device to reveal more information about Juliette, and Ben, which inevitably raises more questions.

2. Tell me something about how The Others got to the island. Were they born there? Did they move there?

Yes - Now we know exactly how long Juliette’s been there, and that it isn’t 100% consensual.

3. Tell me something about what The Others are up to. No more meaningful glances that mean nothing to me.

Yes/No - There’s more evidence that they’re very into fertility, and we also saw the crazy Clockwork Orange-goes-techno thing that Carl was being subjected to, but we’re still not really any wiser.

4. Tell me something about the silly black smoke monster thingy. It’s moving from mysterious, scary threat to slightly lame CGI creature.

No. What the hell is that thing?

5. Give me some of Juliette’s back story. She’s clearly the most sympathetic and interesting Other. I want to know why.

Yes! A massive Juliette in Miami flashback hinting at how and why she wound up on the island. Also that nasty business with the bus…

6. Tell me something about what happened when the hatch exploded. The sky turned purple, that has to mean something doesn’t it?

Yes. But blink and you missed it. Tom said something to Jack about “since the sky turned purple” they’ve had trouble contactig the outside world. Or something. Can anyone clarify what he actually said.

7. Season two closed with Desmond’s ex-lover answering a phone call from some men in the Arctic/Ant-Arctic (somewhere very cold). That was interesting. Tell me more…

No.

8. What happened to Walt? He had those weird abilities that seemed to be really importany. Then he just sailed away with his pops. Are they coming back or what?

No.

So, with four and a half of my eight demands met, I’m happy to put Lost back on my must-watch list. But who am I kidding? I was always going to watch it anyway.

    Daryl,

Personally I’m hanging on to “Lost” by a thread, but this episode was a semi-good step in the right direction. I am NOT going to hang around for 8 years to see how this thing resolves… Just a little bit more jerking around from the writers/producers and I’m gone. :-)

Only half demands met, and you’re back on the show? Wow, you’re lenient. :)
    50%. That’s an ‘F’, isn’t it?

Actually, LESS than 50% if you ask — WFT ate the Pilot in… well… the PILOT?

    I’m gone, baby. WAY gone.

My theory about Juliette and Ben based on this episode:

The writers want us to think they were married or at least a romantic couple. I doubt that now, considering Juliette’s past rocky marriage, and her short time on the island under squirrely circumstances.

I surmise that Ben is actually Juliette’s sister’s son, artificially aged and taught to become a “born leader.” One thing that leads me to think this is the hint about the young woman’s X-rays convincing Juliette that the patient is in her 70s.

I’m with Screen rant. Although the episode was mildly satisfying, there were some things irritating me. I feel Juliette’s story isn’t great. How did she become so cold and evil as to kill someone so easily (even Sawyer said a few eps ao that he knew she could kill), after being so weak? Then again, maybe we’ll see her story on the island as she gets more frustrated. The bus scene, whether accident or deliberate, was ridiculous and felt more like Final Destination than Lost.

But the clockwork Orange/ Parallax View thing was very silly. Just another question and few answers.

But I’ll tune in, just in the hope that something might be explained!

Ratings seems to be dropping for the show, so maybe they won’t do an X-Files.
