Kubrick a Master

th-7134-3.jpgI wish Stanley Kubrick made more movies because his films never seem to be enough for me. I would have loved to see him direct a musical.

I was too young to enjoy his first films: “Lolita,” “Paths of Glory” and “Spartacus.”

Today, viewing these films I see rich, fulfilling stories while each frame engages.

Kubrick was a true master.

He ended his career with “Eyes Wide Shut,” which I saw twice in the movie theater because of the intricacies of his direction and story telling. Although the audiences didn’t react enthusiastically to the picture as I did, I must admit, I loved the humor and pace of the film. Strangers in the Night playing as background music for masquerade party of naked people. Hilarious. Or, Tom Cruises character running from the enemy stops at a kiosk to look back for his assailants his hand touches a newspaper with a headline, “Man Being Chased.” Hilarious.

Although this collection doesn’t include Kubrick’s early films, it’s an ideal gift for any Kubrick fan or enthusiastic film lover.

    Do you have the DVD set? I have the first DVD box set of Kubrick films, but I’m wondering should I just sell it and get this one- but first I’d like to know is it worth it- are the extras any good?

    And Kubrick doing a musical? Have you been watching 2001 too much and gone nuts? ;-)

    Some of my favorite directors, like Michael Curtis or Vincente Minnelli, did it all — every genre in the book. It’s brilliant to see their work because of their diversity.

    Kubrick did drama, comedy, tragedy and sci-fi. A musical would have been his ultimate. Seriously, especially with all the hype for musicals on the silver screen today.

    I wouldn’t sell your box set. I’d get the new one.

    There are 5 films and 10-disc set with one documentary “Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures.” The documentary contains interviews of other filmmakers and actors who worked with Kubrick, also details about his technical breakthroughs as a filmmaker.

    Of course, the films have been completely remastered.
