James Cameron Not Sunk
January 2nd, 2007 in Directors, Movies
Do you want the good news or the bad news? Well, the bad news is that James Cameron’s eagerly anticipated sci-fi feature movie (i.e. not another IMAX movie about sunken ships) Avatar has finally received a release date. So what’s bad about that? Well, in a recent interview with the Independent, he has revealed a summer 2009 release date. Set your watches, folks, that’s only about 30 months left.
There’s not much known about the film. All we know is that it’s been a pet project of Cameron for quite a while, and that he’s left it until now as the required CGI technology wasn’t advanced enough. But now filming is due to start this year. For a slightly tech-heavy article about the CG techniques involved (pretty much like a load of Gollums, from what I gather), check out this article.
Plotwise, it involves a paraplegic war vetern who is transported to another dimension/planet where a war between humans and humanoid creatures are involved. An early draft of the script circulated the internet for a while, with lots of debate as to the plot, such as here, where the backstory may involve humans having to interface with a strange alien creature in order to mine antibodies for all sorts of filthy human diseases. Rumours are abound that Joel Moore (Owen from Dodgeball) has been cast, possibly as the central figure.
And that’s not all on Cameron’s slate. He scripted and is producing Sanctum, but that’s another deep sea diving film, and we’re all sick of that. And of course there’s the sacreligious Battle Angel Alita, that Cameron is supposed to be filming back-to-back with Avatar.
So what’s the good news? Well, we’ll probably see that by 2019.
