If the WGA strike continues much longer, Showtime’s breakout hit “Dexter”, as well as other Showtime series, could soon land on sibling broadcast network CBS. Leslie Moonves, CEO and President of CBS Corp. said at an investors conference on Tuesday that CBS is planning to repurpose some Showtime programs.
According to Moonves, “Dexter” is likely to be the first one to jump ship, “with some edits” as it “fits with [their] crime shows.” CBS, if you recall, is the clear crime show leader with CSI. “Dexter”, which stars Michael C. Hall as a Miami police forensics expert that moonlights as a vigilante serial killer, would be a natural replacement during the strike. It was not specified when exactly “Dexter” would launch on CBS, but they did say it should come “in the near future.”
Other broadcast networks have also been exploring the idea of repuposing series from their sister cable networks, should the strike continue. NBC is rumored to be thinking about moving “Monk” and “Burn Notice” to broadcast TV, and the Sci Fi channel is rumored to be considering a similar move for “Battlestar Galactica.”
Showtime is considering relocating their racy period drama “The Tudors”, and the critically acclaimed comedy “Weeds” to CBS. Unfortunately, if they do make it to standard broadcast TV, they’ll be subjected to some heavy edits.
