Longtime “American Idol” director Bruce Gowers may be departing the show, reported Variety.

Particulars behind Gowers’ departure — and whether it’s permanent or a temporary hiatus — were tough to come by late Thursday night, as the show was in the midst of a live broadcast from CBS Television City.

Should Gowers leave, it’s also not clear who might replace him, although it’s more likely someone already with the show — such as the show’s technical director — might fill in. Gowers is well-known for directing seminal music videos such as Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

He’s been with “Idol” since its 2002 launch, earning an Emmy nomination for the show last year. More recently, the Gowers directed the 59th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards..
