From the brilliant creator of Office Space, King Of The Hill, and Beavis & Butthead; we are given stoner movie that feels like the filler in a small town’s film festival. Luke Wilson must be behind on his mortgage.

Idiocracy is Mike Judge’s premonition about our depressing, distant future. There won’t be killer Schwarzeneggers roaming the Earth or nuclear fallout, but we will be living in landfills, surviving purely on sports drinks, and everything will be sponsored by Carl’s Jr. restaurants. Scary, right? Luke Wilson plays Joe Bowers, an obscenely average soldier in today’s Army who does just enough to get by. That is until his superior officer enrolls him in a top-secret experiment that goes horribly wrong. He wakes up from a drug-induced slumber to find himself five hundred years in the future and, oddly enough, the smartest man on Earth. When his ‘high’ IQ is discovered, Joe is forced to use his so-called intellect to help the morons of the future right all their wrongs all while desperately trying to get back to his own time. Bored yet?

Critiquing a straight-to-DVD movie is like drinking non-alcoholic beer. Completely pointless. Actually, that’s not fair. It’s technically not straight-to-DVD. It was in a hundred and thirty theatres for two weeks and it did do over three hundred grand in revenue. What I’m saying is it might as well have been a Blockbuster Video exclusive. I suggest waiting a year or so when your local cable network decides to play it back to back for Labor Day Weekend. It’s only good for a few laughs at best.
