Home Theater Review: TAW Xtream Screen & Sony ChromaVue

TAW XtreamScreenAfter yesterday’s look at the dnp SuperNova Screen - which allows you to use a front projection screen in a home theater system without making you squint until your eyes disappear - here are two other screens quite literally worth looking into.

First up, the TAW XtreamScreen. Their spelling might be a bit wobbly, but apparently their screen is near indestructible. They’re even billing it as “the first child proof screen” as it can withstand detergents used to clean off things like (and these are their examples) crayon, mustard and grass stains.

Prices range from $1,595 for a 70-inch XtreamScreen to $3,299 for a 123-inch. So if you’re brave enough to test their other claim that “even stepping on the screen will not destroy it!” then you deserve for it to break.

Sony ChromaVueSony’s ChromaVue High Contrast Screen isn’t indestructible, but it is sleek. Which is way better. Eschewing the usual white or silver of most front projection screens, the ChromaVue is dark grey slash black.

It apparently absorbs ambient light and only reflects the specific red, green and blue colour frequencies used by most projectors, which gives the picture a nice bright appearance even when viewed in a brightly lit room. Sounds like it shouldn’t work right? Surely a dark screen makes images harder to see, no? Well apparently not. So kudos to Sony for something original.

The 80-inch version (the only one currently available) costs $2,000.

    I have the 95″ XtreamScreen and I can testify not only to its indestructability (it got knocked over in a move, fell on top of a lamp base, and has only an almost undistinguishable dent as a result.) but also to its performance which is great. This screen is going to last a long time, so I consider the investment well worth the money.
