Oh, movie moguls, have you not learned? Wasn’t Starsky and Hutch not enough to make you take a break from green-lighting movie of TV shows? And don’t our history books now refer to the greatest disaster of the 20th Century being The Avengers? Seemingly not, as the production of 60’s Bond spoof Get Smart is steaming ahead.
Admittedly, Steve Carell is perfect as the bumbling spy Max Smart. However, reports are out that he will now be joined by the Rock, as a companion spy. Will it work? Well, Bond is still ripe for mocking, especially with Casino Royale taking itself so seriously. And the Rock? I can only hope that the Get Smart film proposes to place modern spy figures like XXX in the target sight of piss-taking.
I fear this may continue the trend of large-scale US films based on TV shows underperforming (more in the thought department than the bank account, admittedly). And the trend continues with a rumour that a movie based on that classic 80’s show Magnum P.I. will have Matthew McConaughey as the eponymous womaniser. Now, I’m not saying that Tom Selleck deserves Oscars, but he did have some charm, albeit in a strictly 80’s, tight jeans manner, whereas McConaughey is a veritable walking plank. Plus, the dated nature of the show will make it hard to be updated, even in the ridiculously “gritty” way Miami Vice was.
But there is some good news…
It has been recently announced that a feature-length film of the wonderfully insane Aqua Teen Hunger Force will hits screens in March. The Adult Swim short cartoon series features a drinks cup, a pack of fries, and a hunk of beef as the lead protagonists, taking on all adversity, from aliens to asshole neighbours. God only knows what they’ll be up to for the film, but check out here for a fun teaser.
