Amber Heard has beaten out the likes of Scarlet Johansson and Keira Knightley to star opposite Johnny Depp in The Rum Diary, reports The Hollywood Reporter.
The film will be an adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson’s novel, following a washed-up, hard-drinking journalist named Paul Kemp in 1950s Puerto Rico. Heard will play Chenault, the free-spirited girlfriend of a fellow journalist who cheats on him with Kemp, trying to convince him to run away with her.
It has been written by Bruce Robinson, who is also directing. The film is being produced by Depp himself, along with Christi Dembrowski and Graham King.

This has the potential of a great movie experience. Johnny Depp is probably the only actor alive who would take this risk to both produce & act in Hunter Thompson’s least commercial novel. Thanks Johnny. . .I’m really looking forward to this one.
