This is actually an unusual review for us because it’s the first time I’ve covered a short film in two parts. This was brought to my attention during a panel at Kuzuricon by anime voice actor and then some Todd Haberkorn, who wrote and directed this one.

Called “Green Eyed Clown”, it’s the story of Bongo, a clown in a world full of clowns, where being a performing clown is about like being a combination celebrity and super-scientist.  Though he is a success by nearly everyone’s standards, there’s one clown who can’t abide his continued good fortune, his own mentor.  Thus, when his mentor kidnaps him, Bongo is going to have to find his way out, in one piece.  But he discovers that he has a secret power deep within himself that will help him fend off his insane clown mentor.  Okay, not so much inside himself as inside…his NOSE.

This may be one of the strangest fantasy epics I’ve seen in a long time.  It’s like a strange version of Star Wars, but for clowns and without all the weird family drama…only in a way, it DOES have the weird family drama.  It’s a highly unconventional and fairly effective drama that even comes with some star power if you’re fond of anime.  Check out the voice of the 911 operator Bongo calls; that’s the same guy who did Zolo on One Piece.

Green Eyed Clown may be one of the strangest movies you’ve seen in a while, but with plenty of things to enjoy about it too.  The Screenhead Ten Scale gives this strange clown picture an eight out of ten.  There’s plenty of comic glee and a little bit of action in this, and that’s a combination that makes for a good short film.
