USA Network announces the launch of Character Project, an ongoing artistic initiative to celebrate the extraordinary people, from all walks of life, who make this country unique. Inspired by USA’s iconic “Characters Welcome” brand, and with the support of the not-for-profit photography organization Aperture Foundation, USA assembled a team of 11 world-class photographers to capture the character of America during the summer of 2008. The artists’ work is showcased in the powerful photography book entitled American Character: A Photographic Journey (Chronicle Books), which features a foreword by best-selling author and former “NBC Nightly News” anchor Tom Brokaw.
American Character features the work of legendary artists Mary Ellen Mark and Sylvia Plachy as well as Dawoud Bey, Jeff Dunas, David Eustace, Eric Ogden and emerging talents Marla Rutherford, Anna Mia Davidson, Joe Fornabaio, Eric McNatt and Richard Renaldi. Each photographer provides a provocative perspective on our nation’s most compelling characters. From high school football players in Brownwood, Texas and organic farmers in the Northwest, to residents of Alaska, famous left-of-center musicians and the people connected by a single transcontinental road, the book celebrates the distinct characters and varied pockets of life that make our country great.

This project is awesome. I think that going into the middle of the United States taking photos of true Americans was a great idea. Photos don’t only show you people that connect us but also gives us an insight on the lives that other people live that may live right next door that you haven’t notice or those across the country that you have wondered about. With this project, we have been given the opportunity to see the many sides and faces of America; whether it is happy, sad, lonely, full of family and friends or survival. Thank you for sharing this with everyone. Allowing each American to see how other people live and cope with daily life.

When I was 6 years old I cried because my mother wasn’t able to come with me on a field trip to the zoo. We didn’t have much money. She told me to wait in the front room. I did. Hoping she would change her mind. She came back with a small instamatic Kodak 126 camera and said, “even though I can’t come with you to see all of the beautiful animals,” she gave me the camera, “you can bring the trip back to me.” I took the camera. I gave her a great big hug and said, “Mom, thank you mom, I promise that I will bring you the bestest pictures ever in the world.” When I got to the zoo I took my time with each shot. I framed them. Every shot was worth a million bucks to me. That’s when I developed a love for the art of photography. I am 41 years old now. I still feel the same way about each shot.
