Gibson’s Apocalypto Tops Box Office
December 11th, 2006 in Box Office, Movies
Even with a director now famous for drunk driving and antisemitism (both on the same night) and a reputation for violence, Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto was the number one draw at the box office this weekend. It took just over $14 million, not too shabby for a film in a language that only 805,000 people still speak.
Either they all went to see it this weekend, and paid nearly $200 each per ticket, or Mel Gibson correctly gambled that American audiences aren’t so scared of subtitles as the marketing men would have us believe.
The Holiday also made a decent debut, taking around $13.5 million and the number two spot. Happy Feet and Casino Royale slip down to number three and four respectively, with Blood Diamond and Unaccompanied Minors debuting at five and six.
