_272175_baywatch150 From Variety comes word that Paramount Pictures has hired Jeremy Garelick to rewrite and direct Baywatch, the big-screen adaptation of the popular television show about lifeguards who patrol a beach in California.

Garelick will make his directing debut through this film. He most recently did an uncredited rewrite of The Hangover and The Insane Laws.

The project has gone through turbulent times. DreamWorks paid a seven figure sum for remake rights for the film back in 2005 and got a script by Jay Scherick and David Ronn. That script was heavy on action, but the rewrite by Garelick will focus on delivering laughs. Apparently, Garelick has never seen the original TV show and its cast, which he believes is an opportunity to turn it into a broad comedy.

The film is yet to enter production.
