The Los Angeles 48 Hour Film Project may not be exactly well-known, but its results are definitely something to see. What follows is a piece covering one such title, Frankie.
The interesting thing about the so-called 4HFP is that certain elements were required as part of every film. Each director was required to draw a genre out of a hat, and then shoot a film that included a rope, a character named Captain Chris Murray, and the phrase, “Let’s just say, mission accomplished.”
It’s a pretty standard scene–a boy named Frankie is out looking for some yard work to save up money for a bike. And all is well, until one place he finds features folks that aren’t too willing to let go of the past–even if Frankie has to stand in.
Frankie doesn’t end well. And for a movie with a runtime of about six minutes that’s saying something. But still, it’s all rather chilling, watching this domestic tableau gone horribly wrong play out. At the same time, it’s really rather bleak, and the thoroughly unhappy ending will probably leave you feeling nonplussed at the end.
As a horror film, Frankie is downright effective, but don’t expect to feel happy about it.
