Former Disney Exec has dream film with Dreamworks

The name of Nina Jacobson may not mean much to the casual filmgoer. One didn’t see her name in the credits, but she was the Walt Disney executive who greenlit many of the studio’s live action films. Jacobson was responsible for nurturing the career of M. Night Shyamalan until their rupture over Lady in the Water, as well as Disney remakes of their classic titles, usually starring Lindsay Lohan.
When Disney went through major restructuring, Jacobson lost her job, ironically at the same time that the second Pirates of the Caribbean was conquering the box office. It was in part because of that film that Disney has chosen to make fewer films that have big budgets, and are aimed towards a general audience. The downside is that Disney, through their Touchstone label, had been the studio for offbeat, but acclaimed films by such filmmakers as Wes Anderson (Rushmore) and the Coen Brothers (O Brother, Where art Thou?).
Jabobson has chosen to produce a film titled Dominion, about a guy leading an all-robot army platoon. Jacobson is quoted in discussing the upcoming movie, “It’s a film that will require a real visionary director, and it’s a project that has a lot of big-movie elements.” Jacobson could well be describing her boss, Steven Speilberg. At this time, I doubt that M. Night Shyamalan is on Jacobson’s wish list.
