Two more films announced to premiere at this years Toronto International Film Festival are Julie Taymor’s Across the Universe and Woody Allen’s Cassandra’s Dream.
Director Julie Taymor and Revolution Studios chief Joe Roth have apparently resolved their public dispute over the theatrical cut of the film. Thirty songs by The Beatles are used in this musical look at the turbulence of the late Sixties. According to the official website, Across the Universe is scheduled to open on a limited basis on September 14, with a wide release to follow the next week. While Taymor’s reputation was established for her creative staging of The Lion King on Broadway, her work on film has been of interest as well. While her film debut, Titus recieved some mixed reviews, the labor of love Frieda was a critical success and Oscar winner.
Woody Allen’s newest film, shot in London, is about two brothers in love with the same woman. The brothers are portrayed by Ewan McGregor and Colin Farrell. What has so far been revealed about the plot is that this will be a drama, with the two men’s relationship with Hayley Atwell, which leads to crime and sibling rivalry. Unlike Woody’s past films which had soundtracks created from his record collection of old jazz tunes and standards, Cassandra’s Dream will have an original score by Philip Glass. Glass has been nominated three times for the Academy Award for Best Original Score, most recently for Notes on a Scandal. A Weinstein Brothers release, Cassandra’s Dream is scheduled to open on November 30.
