Employee Of The Month DVD Review: A big budget Costco training video.
January 16th, 2007 in Dvd, Reviews
Starring Dane Cook and Jessica Simpson’s rack, Employee Of The Month was nothing more than the Dax Shepard show.
This film is a lesson for anyone who gets through life on just the bare minimum. It teaches them that you can change it all around in just thirty days, get the promotion you always wanted, and get the girl at the end. Let’s just say I’ll try to keep this away from my lazy younger brother. Zack (Cook) is a slacker in it’s truest form. He is nearing thirty, has no car, lives with his grandma, and he still has the same box-boy job he’s had for the past decade. When others would strive for advancement or success, he fell in love with the lack of responsibility and has no plans to change. That is until the new transfer, Amy (Simpson), walked through the store’s doors to fill the open cashier position. Zach learns about her rumored affection for the employee of the month (hence the title) and suddenly he sees an incentive to excel at work. Doing so puts him in direct competition with Vince (played by the hilarious Dax Shepard), who has held the honor for an unprecedented seventeen months and is on his way to the company record books and a brand new car. With Amy and a new promotion at stake, these two battle up and down the aisles of fake-Costco until one comes up the undisputed victor.
One day they will call this the movie that killed careers. Whoever told Dane Cook this film would help him make the transition from stand-up comedian to box office gold lied directly in his face. Don’t get me wrong, Cook is an innovative and entertaining performer. Personally, I enjoy the energy he gives at his shows. This movie captured none of that. Not only that, it made me forget that he was ever funny. Whoever told Jessica Simpson that this movie would take her Dukes Of Hazzard success and finally put her over the top should be fired. They could have easily replaced her with two basketballs and a blonde wig and no one would have been the wiser. I just hope she’s aware that’s all she was good for. The chemistry between her and Cook was painful to watch at times and every scene is stolen by her plunging neckline. My pause button definitely got a work out.
The unlikely stars of this movie are Dax and Andy Dick. Whenever either of these two are on screen, the entertainment value of the movie instantly goes through the roof. I’d even go as far as to say this movie is worth viewing just to see the overly cocky Vince fight for his reputation as he’s being beaten as his own game. Or even to see Andy Dick’s character Lon, the optometrist who’s legally blind, try to function around his co-workers. Just don’t expect the entertainment to come from the supposed ’stars’.
