DVD review: Nightmare City
August 8th, 2007 in Dvd, Reviews, horror

A while back, I read about an upcoming film titled Flight of the Living Dead. Yes, I chuckled a bit when I read the title. Then I started to think back to why the story seemed familiar to me. After checking the synopsis of several films, I finally realized that the filmmakers may have gotten their idea from Umberto Lenzi’s Nightmare City.
In this 1980 Italian zombie movie, a bunch of zombies emerge from an airplane that has seemingly landed without a pilot at the controls. While not exactly explained, the zombies are victims of radiation. As far as dumb zombie movies go, this one is pretty stupid. Even though the cast is primarily European, the dubbing and the Anglo last names of most of the characters are suppose to convince the audience that the film takes place in the US. The film has its moments, particularly when Mel Ferrer, as a military commander barks out, “Aim for the brain”.
And if you think Zack Snyder invented fast moving zombies for his remake of Dawn of the Dead, guess again! Lenzi’s zombies run, jump, and operate heavy equipment. Mostly they pursue people with sharp implements to kill, maim and suck blood. In the DVD supplement, Lenzi discusses how he wanted to make his zombies different from the ones in films by George Romero and Lucio Fulci. Lenzi also discusses how he intended the film to be a warning about environmental distasters and government coverups. The zombies are not very scary, but calling them pizza faced may be an insult to pizzas. Most people who watch Nightmare City will enjoy the film for the bare breasted women and the bits of brain being shot off on screen.
