This trailer recently caught my attention. While its name suggests a gross-out horror flick, Disturbia seems to be a return to a concept thriller. Young Kale, a wreckless young hooligan, faces a new form of parole: a tracking device that sets off an alarm if Kale ventures a few feet beyond his home, forcing him to stay at home. Bored, he takes up spying on his neighbours. Getting his friends involved, he eventually gets suspicious about his neighbour who may have murdered a woman. Sound familiar? Well, it should, as it’s EXACTLY THE SAME as Alfred Hitchcock’s brilliant Rear Window. Only with teenagers.
And if that isn’t bad enough the trailer shows us most of the movie, the suspicion, the first accusation, the friend’s venture into the man’s home, and eventually a confrontation with the evil-seeming individual. you may as well save yourself the price of a ticket. But could the film actually be good? It’s directed by DJ Caruso, best known for a few episodes of The Shield, and that Angelina Jolie film nobody bothered to watch. Expect Disturbia to be sweaty, shouty, and boring.
The let the movie industry take heed. There is an utter over-saturation of horror movies this year. From The Hitcher to the Messengers to The Abandoned and the Host (although they’re foreign), Premonition, The Reaping, and then Hostel 2, they really are getting too samey and dull to last. Even the mindless members of the mainstream will eventually look to other things for a thrill.

I’m not defending this crap, but for me, DJ Caruso’s best known for directing The Salton Sea, a very entertaining film filled with colorful characters, two of which are played by Val Kilmer and Vincent D’Onofrio.
Oh, and I did bother to watch Taking Lives and yes, I should not have. *yawn*
