Peter Jackson is the producer of District 9 and he told Entertainment Weekly that the movie is “…an utterly original film.” I am inclined to agree with Jackson because the movie has no stars; it was made for relatively little money ($30 million) by a 29-year-old, unknown South African-born director Neill Blomkamp.
What I find as interesting turn is that Entertainment Weekly has boldly called the movie “the most unlikely sci-fi blockbuster of the season.” Exactly what does that mean? We will find out when the movie opens August 14, 2009. But I must admit that the movie would be nowhere if Peter Jackson’s name and talent weren’t attached.
I have viewed a couple of District 9 movie trailers, I can honestly say the movie is a science fiction thrill ride with lots of handheld camera work and I kind of surreal, reality TV quality and feel.
The movie is about alien refugees who are confined to an area known as District 9 in South Africa. Multi-National United is contracted to govern the Non-humans. The private company will profit tremendously from the activation of alien weaponry, which requires alien DNA. When an MNU operative contracts a virus that alters his DNA, he becomes the most valuable man in the world, as well as the most hunted, because he is the key to unlocking the secrets of alien technology.
