The Directors Guild of America has named its five nominees for best director, and it’s the men behind the same flicks named as Best Film by the Producers Guild. Leading the pack is Martin Scorsese with his seventh nomination, this time for The Departed. The four other nominees are all first-timers: Stephen Frears for The Queen, Bill Condon for Dreamgirls, Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu for Babel, and the team of Jonathan Drayton and Valerie Faris for Little Miss Sunshine.
Like the Producers Guild nominees, the Directors Guild nominees are expected to be duplicated when the Academy Award nominations are announced. As not all DGA members are also members of the Academy, it is still possible that the Academy Award nominees may differ to include such Academy favorites as Clint Eastwood, more likely for Letters from Iwo Jima, or Pedro Almodovar, a past Foreign Film winner, for Volver. Another possible candidate is Paul Greengrass for United 93.
In the Hollywood Reporter, DGA President Michael Apted stated: “Each of these five nominees has demonstrated a remarkable ability to blend craft and vision in the pursuit of masterful storytelling. What makes it truly meaningful to directors is that this award is decided solely by their peers — the men and women who know firsthand the passion, sweat and fear that goes into creating feature films.”
The DGA Awards will be handed out February 3.
