Dial 999-9999 for Thai horror-comedy on DVD

What first needs to be understood about Thailand is that their common operative word is roughly translated as “fun”. If it isn’t fun, nobody bothers with it. This is why there is a lot of comedy in Thai horror films, sometimes with the emphasis on comedy. 999-9999 takes itself a lot less seriously than the Japanese One Missed Call. The film manages to be gory without the grimness of Final Destination series.
The basic story is about a group of university students who are told that a fellow student died after calling a mysterious phone number. The new girl at school, Rainbow, verifies the story and the rumor that anyone who calls the phone number after midnight will be granted one wish. Rainbow also warns her new friends not to call. Of course the students call, and subsequently die in various creative ways, twenty-four hours after speaking to the mysterious voice.
Don’t bother looking for originality or anything related to logic. Even Lady in the Water somehow made more sense. Director Peter Manus put his energy into creative cinematography and sets and costumes with bright candy colors. If you have to wonder why the obligatory hot chick who has to die is locked in a watertight bathroom in a yacht, filling with water from a broken pipe, with a bird that flew in from somewhere, and about a dozen floating double-edged razor blades, this is not the film for you. 999-9999 is nothing more or less than gory, amusing and forgettable entertainment.
