David Fincher to Take on “Black Hole”

blackhole.jpgWhat once was TV show revivals is now becoming comic book revivals. Yes, Hollywood seems keen on cracking the comic nerd market after the ridiculous success that was 300. Hell, even the French are at it, after adapting Persepolis to much critical acclaim. Now things are moving on, with almost everything Frank Miller spilt ink on becoming a movie, as well as Akira, Watchmen, etc.

And now David Fincher has signed on to direct yet another comic adaptation. This time it’s Black Hole, originally written, and drawn, by Charlie Burns. The comic is set in the 70s in which a group of teenagers contract a STD that causes strange genetic mutations. That sounds like an allegory promoting abstinence to me, but apparently it’s more like a metaphor for the awkwardness of adolescence.

Fincher is certainly an interesting choice. He has already proven that he can capture the spirit of an era in the excellent Zodiac. Plus, there was enough dry humour in Fight Club, and enough visual prowess in Panic Room to suggest that he can handle such a bizarre and humorous (I presume) idea without getting silly.

Details of the film are sketchy, although it is being written by Roger Avary, who recently penned the awful dialogue of Beowulf. In the meantime, Fincher fans can look forward to The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, an F Scott Fitzgerald story starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett.

This was a very strange and entertaining comic. In the right hands it could become quite a movie!
