Coming to DVD on May 13, 2008 is “The Great Debaters” from The Weinstein Company and Genius Products, starring two-time Academy Award winner Denzel Washington. Â Available as a special two-disc collector’s edition, “The Great Debaters” is based on the true story of Professor Melvin B. Tolson, a debate team coach, who uses the power of words to shape a group of students from a small African-American college into a historically renowned debate team.
Not only did the film receive a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture, but it also won a handful of awards, including: the African American Film Critics Award for Best Picture, the Stanley Kramer Award, the Freedom of Expression Award, and four NAACP Image Awards.
Also a part of the film’s cast are Oscar winner Forest Whitaker, Kimberly Elise, Jumee Smollett, Nate Parker, and Denzel Whitaker. “The Great Debaters” was produced by Oprah Winfrey, David Crockett, Todd Black, Kate Forte, Joe Roth, Molly Allen, and Melody Fowler.
