Classic Boys’ Adventure “Tom Swift” To Get ModernizedNovember 27th, 2007 in Book-to-Movie, Children, Movie News, TV |
Way far back at the turn of the last century in the early 1900’s, before Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys, there was Tom Swift. Almost 100 years after making his first appearance on the printed page, Tom Swift is set to make his first TV, Movie, and video game appearances. According to Variety, Worldwide Biggies, an offshoot of Nickelodeon, has acquired the rights to the Tom Swift series.
The Tom Swift series began in 1910, and has been continued over the years by a number of ghost writers. The series now includes more than 100 books. Worldwide Biggies plans to introduce Swift to a new generation, first through a feature film, and then a videogame. After that, they plan to follow up with episodes for TV and the web. A similar pattern was used for the “Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius” franchise at Nick, which opened first as a film, and then became a television show.
If all goes well, Tom Swift will be taking over the media. If all doesn’t go well, and Swift goes the way of the last Nancy Drew movie, well that will really be a bummer for them. Although, at the very least, with all of the cool adventures they have to choose from, Swift should at least be as cool to the 7 to 9 year old as Jimmy Neutron was.
