Ever since the triumph that was The Dark Knight finished in the cinemas, fans have been eagerly awaiting news of the next Batman sequel from director Christopher Nolan. Conversely, many were so disappointed in Bryan Singer’s frankly ridiculous Superman Returns that the appetite for more Superman adventures was lost. But news over at Deadline will appeal to both factions.

Warner Brothers are eagerly developing another Superman movie, and so they have hired Chris Nolan to oversee the development of the project. Superman Returns was considered to be a box-office failure as its worldwide take probably didn’t cover the production and marketing budget. And with The Dark Knight proving so successful, it’s not surprising that execs want to go the “dark” way of one of the most iconic superheroes. No other talent has been assigned, and while Bryan Singer and Brandan Routh have not been ruled out, it’s unlikely that they’ll return. But the interesting question is whether Superman should go “dark”. While Batman was inherently so, Superman is not, rather standing as a figure of hope and moral steadfastedness. Is darkening it merely a case of film execs being sheep and following whereever they think the money lies, or will they attempt to adhere to the elements of the edgier Superman comics? Well, bringing Nolan on board is at least a step in the right direction.

But Batman fans need not despair. Nolan does not seem to be directing Superman over Batman. In fact, scripting appears to have started on his third Batman film. Brother Johnathan Nolan and David Goyer (who recently backed out of helming the TV series Flashforward to focus on “film” projects) are working away on an idea that will best, or at least equal, the appeal of TDK.  And fans of Nolan’s work will be able to check out the intriguing Inception this summer.

I am a huge Superman fan. As a child I ultimately loved the sweetness of the Christopher Reeve films. I enjoyed Superman Returns but do feel it lacked the luster of the older films with back story and character development.

While I was not a fan of the acting in Superman Returns and felt it almost entirely miscast, I absolutely believe that Brandon Routh did an amazing job with the material he had down to the smallest mannerisms. It made Superman come back for us who are old enough to remember viewing the Richard Donner films in the theater. I would love to see a somewhat darker more menacing villian for Superman to conquer and comic fans know there are so many to choose from, but I do not know if going as dark as the Dark Knight is a good idea for the Superman character himself. Actually its not. Superman is one of the few superheros that we always feel good about and I’m not sure I would even want to see a much darker side.
