Romeo Must DieI’m reminded of Studio 60 once again, as an ill-fated skit late in the show revolves around Karl Rove sitting down with Hollywood to encourage more patriotic films in the wake of 9/11. The characters of the Aaron Sorkin dramady were insulted by the implication. Even in real life, international bloggers questioned the pro-military bent of Michael Bay’s Transformers.

But if Transformers was the worst American propaganda could do (though I’m frankly not concerned it is either), just wait till you hear what chairman of China Film Group wants for his country’s patriotic films. Encouraging praise of his country’s rising economy, Han Saping not only wants this translated to film – he also doesn’t want any questions asked.

According to IMDB, “There can’t be anyone who makes fun of it. People who do either have ulterior motives or they’re mentally challenged.”

That’s right – he’s apparently officially endorsed films which are quite literally anti-mentally-handicapped. We haven’t seen a slant this steep Stateside since Team America, which featured mentally-challegend Matt Damon yelling his name. And yes, in case you’re wondering, Team America is one with mock propaganda made with deficating puppets.

But not all economic growth is welcome. Movies ranging from Rush Hour 3 to Jet Li’s 2000 martial arts actioner Romeo Must Die were banned for unsavory Chinese gangster, even if the plots focused on the main characters kicking Triad butt. Even Pirates of the Carribean: At World’s End faced major edits for Chow-Yun Fat’s character Sao Feng.

In short, as long as China wields an iron fist over its most popular exports worldwide – its film industry – any other PR victory for its controversially booming industry is surely to be a hollow one.
