Berlin Fest Begins With Stones

“300” opened the festival last year, which was considered a popcorn flick. So perhaps, this time around “Shine a Light” is apropos for the Berlinale. Although, I’d be happy to watch Gerard Butler, stars in “300,” in any kind of movie.

‘Under the Same Moon” Sundance 2007 Favorite

February 6th, 2008 by Kenna McHugh in Drama, Festivals, Movie News, Movies, The Movie Biz

under.jpgSounds like a wonderful film that opens March 19th at selected theaters.

“Under the Same Moon” earned a standing ovation at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival for its poignant, emotionally rich tale of a mother and son living on opposite sides of the U.S.-Mexico border connected by an enduring love. In her feature film debut, director Patricia Riggen weaves their parallel stories into a vividly textured tapestry of yearning and devotion that portrays a child’s courage and tenacity, and a mother’s sacrifice.
Nine-year-old Carlos aka Carlitos (AdriánAlonso, “The Mask of Zorro”) is one of the countless children left behind by parents who come to the U.S. seeking a way to provide for their families. His mother, Rosario (Kate del Castillo, “Bordertown”) has worked illegally as a domestic in Los Angeles for four years, sending money home to her son and mother to give them a chance at a better life.

When the death of his grandmother leaves young Carlitos alone, he takes his fate into his own hands and heads north across the border to find his mother. As he journeys from his rural Mexican village to the L.A., Carlitos faces seemingly insurmountable obstacles with a steely determination and unfettered optimism that earn him the grudging respect and affection of a reluctant protector, a middle-aged migrant worker named Enrique (Eugenio Derbez, “Padre Nuestro”).

The unlikely pair finds its way from Tucson to East L.A., but the only clue Carlitos has to his mother’s whereabouts is her description of the street corner from which she has called him each Sunday for the last four years. Unaware that Rosario is only hours away from returning to Mexico to be with her son, Carlitos and Enrique desperately comb the vast unfamiliar city for a place he has seen only in his imagination.

Taron Lexton’s New Film… ‘Struck’ starring Kelly Preston, Bodhi Elfman, Jenna Elfman, Jennifer Aspen…

January 30th, 2008 by Kenna McHugh in Actors, Festivals, Movie News, The Movie Biz

belfman.jpgSynopsis

On his way to work one day, Joel (Bodhi Elfman) is impaled through the chest by a three-foot arrow. But it doesn’t harm him. And it won’t come out. So Joel has to learn to deal – both with his newfound protrusion, and his own painful loneliness. He tries to go to work, to date women, but no one seems ready to accept his strange flaw. Little does he know, his life is about to change forever…  Background In early 2004 Screenwriter Milena Ferreira, and her husband, Producer – Nathan Lorch, came up with the original story of “Struck.” On a romantic trip to Northern California Milena was “struck” by this idea of doing it as a short film. The concepts all of a sudden flowed together seamlessly and the short script was written two days later.A week later the idea was pitched to friend and director Taron Lexton, who loved it and wanted to help see it made. From there the Producing team of Taron (TXL Films) Nathan, and Milena (625 Productions) was born. The team then grew to include Casting Director and Producer Leslie Brown, and actor Bodhi Elfman as the lead. Each of them brought to the table their unique talents and strengths as artists as well as their individual contacts in the Industry. A crew was gathered made up of friends and professionals that each knew.

Within a couple weeks the cast was set to include many name actors who were all on board out of their love for filmmaking and as an artistic collaboration for the film festival scene. The film was shot in late June of 2007 and completed in post-production in January of 2008.
