I see fewer mainstream films in theaters because I usually feel disappointed. Marketing has become more important than filmmaking skills. The talk about "Spiderman" sequels strikes me as absurd because the films have gotten so expensive that the can barely break even based on the traditional formula that a film needs to earn two to three times its negative cost (the actually cost of production). One thing to note is that Japanese films have often had remakes and series as part of their tradition - but the big difference is that the films were made with responsible budgets. The current Hollywood trend of a new, super expensive would be blockbuster seemingly every week has discouraged interesting filmmaking both in content and style.
