Cahiers du Cinema will soon be available on-line, in both French and English. For those not familiar with the venerable magazine: back in the 1950s, under the guidance of original editor Andre Bazin, Cahiers published articles by several future filmmakers including Francois Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Claude Chabrol, Jacques Rivette and Eric Rohmer. Cahiers also published the first writings about the often mis-understood “auteur theory”. The English language website is scheduled to be available this Friday. While the goal is to create a subscription based readership, one-time readership is available for five dollars.
Current editor-in-chief Jean-Michel Frodon has stated
“Les Cahiers has for a long time enjoyed international recognition. Today, Internet gives us the possibility to make its work accessible throughout the whole world. It’s a huge new market of course, but it’s also the possibility of making an original and exacting voice heard, based on the love of cinema and the belief that through it we can understand the world better.”
As for having the same vivid writing in French translated into English, Frodon adds
“We don’t think that English-speakers are any less capable of reflection than French-speakers. Our team of 18 translators is made up of people familiar with Les Cahiers’ way of writing and thinking, and will make every effort to see that the English version is as faithful as possible to the original.”
Among the articles in this new edition of Cahiers will one on original contributor Jacques Rivette, still an active filmmaker at the age of 79.

Sorry Emilie, I’m missing IFC while I’m in Thailand. If you want a laugh, you can see my IFC appearance in “The Ultimate Film Fanatic” on YouTube, assuming it’s still available.
