Many fans of the largely successful X-Men movie trilogy were deeply disappointed when Bryan Singer decided not to direct the final installment and allow Brett Ratner (Rush Hour) to take the reins. They were probably even more so when he opted to make the dull Superman Returns. And they were mostly deeply disappointed with the spin-off Wolverine film, the most vacuous of the four films. But now there’s some excitement brewing at the prospect of Singer returning to the X-Men franchise. At a South Korean press conference Singer said “I’m still looking to possibly returning to the ‘X-Men’ franchise. I’ve been talking to Fox about it…”. While this is a hardly definitive agreement, many are hoping that Singer will make a fourth X-Men movie, or possibly work on another spin-off film, such as the much discussed Magneto prequel.
Many claimed that X3 was a disastrous end to a great franchise, all bang and no heart. But was X2 that good a flick? For it’s length it was still unable to handle its large amount of characters, and we found character transitions occurring in leaps and bounds. It was unfocused film-making, and perhaps Bryan Singer would be better leaving the X-Men world and focussing on something new.
