We will see if this is the beginning of a trend. Now that Martin Scorsese has achieved Academy Award glory with his remake of a film made in Hong Kong, there are published reports that Joel Schumacher will be remaking Johnny To’s Breaking News for Paramount Vantage. The film is about what happens after a news crew televises the police being beat by a gang of robbers, with a detective setting up their capture as news event.

The original Breaking News is out on DVD. One of To’s recent films, Triad Election has been getting theatrical release in the U.S. this summer. As for Schumacher, he’s at best an uneven filmmaker whose best film, Tigerland was barely released by 20th Century-Fox. Of course there are many fans out there who have never forgiven Schumacher for what he did with the Batman franchise.
