While I was writing this article on the box office tally, I had the same thought. Prices were a lot lesser back when the original Star Wars appeared on the silver screen for the first time.

That says a lot for Star Wars still today. Thanks for sharing your link, too.

And the Consumer Price Index is up about 30% just since 1997. Star Wars is still the king when it comes to the only figure anyone who doesn’t have points on the film cares about: butts in seats.

Box Office Mojo has a handy chart. Ticket prices averaged $2.23 in 1977, $4.59 in ‘97 for Titanic and an estimated $7.08 for this year. Star Wars got its money with substantially cheaper tickets than either Titanic or Dark Knight. And it is right that it is so.
