While the cinematic version of James Bond has appeared in several films not based on any of the novels by Ian Fleming, the literary James Bond has also continued following the death of Fleming in 1964. Among those who have penned the further adventures of James Bond, with the blessing of the Fleming estate have been Kingsley Amis and John Gardner. Corinne Turner, managing director of Ian Fleming Publications, has chosen Sebastian Faulks to write Devil May Care. The new Bond book is scheduled to be published in 2008 to coincide with the 100th birthday of Fleming. Faulks previous books include Charlotte Gray, which was made into a film starring Cate Blanchett.
While none of the James Bond novels not written by Fleming have been filmed, Faulks’ book may prove to change that. Among those who have had the opportunity to read the manuscript is Barbara Broccoli, the daughter of original Bond film producer, “Cubby” Broccoli, as well as producer of the more recent Bond films. Broccoli has been quoted as saying that had no one told her, she would have believed Devil May Care was one of Fleming’s manuscripts found in the basement.
