Black Sheep Trailer: 28 Sheep Later

After just watching The Host, my faith in horror has been somewhat revived. In fact, the film was so good it got me in the bloodthirsty mood for upcoming flicks of the same calibre. 28 Weeks Later is out in May, but with no trailer available (nor any Danny Boyle or Alex Garland involvement), it could go either way. But this film could be a surprise hit. With comedy horror having a sort of comeback since Shaun of the Dead (Severance, Slither etc), Black Sheep has a lot to live up to, especially coming from New Zealand, where Peter “No Me No Hobbit” Jackson made his mark with the amusing Braindead.
The plot seems to involve a flock of genetically mutated sheep who start a killing spree in rural New Zealand. What impressed me about the trailer was the convincing effects, courtesy of Weta (although the trailer didn’t have to spell it out for me), and a sense of scale (i.e. the long shot of the flock galloping, if sheep can do that, towards the farmhouse) that can make or break the mood for horror movies. Watch the opening of The Host, and you’ll know what I mean. What I didn’t like was the obligatory sheep-shagging joke, and of course the worry that it may be a one-joke flick (as indicated by its initial 6.6 rating in IMDB, which is usually not a good sign). To be honest, I’m just annoyed that they thought of the “Violence of the Lambs” tag-line before I had a chance to post it.
Still, I am rather pleased I managed to refrain from sheep puns throughout the post. Black Sheep will hit US cinemas in June 22, and with a little luck people will be flocking to see it… Aw nuts.
