Biggest Box Office Flops Of 2006December 26th, 2006 in Box Office, Movies |
Variety have looked over their shoulder at 2006, naming and shaming the biggest flops of the year. The list is alphabetical, and based on cost of production versus domestic (US) box office.
Here are the gobblers:
All The Kings Men
production cost:$55 million
domestic box office: $7 million
Basic Instinct 2
$70 million
$5 million
Flushed Away
$150 million
$61 million
Flyboys
$60 million
$13 million
The Fountain
$35 million
$9 million
Freedomland
?
$12 million
A Good Year
$35 million
$7 million
Lady In The Water
$75 million
$42 million
Poseidon
$160 million
$60 million
The Wicker Man
$40 million
$23 million
Of course some of these films will make enough money to turn a profit after foreign box office and DVD sales, but production companies will still consider any film a turkey if it fails to recoup its production cost at the domestic box office.
[update] This speaks volumes about the importance of opening weekend ticket sales, and has to be a bad thing. Basic Instinct 2 didn’t really deserve to turn a profit or even get made in the first place, but it’s unfair to expect a fairly complicated film like The Fountain to make $35 million domestically when some people get confused watching American Idol.

$160 million on a Poseidon remake? Who made that crazy decision?
December 27th, 2006 at 9:00 pm
The Fountain was pretty good. Too bad no one saw it.
Wonder where/if idiocracy fits on that list.

Production companies will consider a movie a turkey if it doesn’t recoup production costs at the domestic box office huh? I guess these “production company” executives must not have gone to business school. Fascinating.
December 27th, 2006 at 10:15 pm
I bet they will try to blame piracy for this too.
December 28th, 2006 at 12:49 am
I know I personally pirated more than 10 copies of Flushed Away, if by “pirate” you mean “scowled at the display in Target and cried “avast maties, ‘ware the bad films off the port bow” to passerby”..

More likely, you’re not cut out to be an entertainment industry executive…

What! How is Pirates of the Carribean to blame for other movies doing badly?!?!
December 28th, 2006 at 4:42 am
“Our movies don’t suck! It’s piracy that’s eating our income!”
ARR!
December 28th, 2006 at 5:22 am
Poseidon… laf. Who decided to spend 160m on that?
Trust me, I already saw Gene Hackman try to get out of a sinking ship, on TNT, one too many times.
December 28th, 2006 at 6:27 am
geez guys, recall that hollywood makes more then 2/3 of its money on the DVDs, not the theatre showings!
December 28th, 2006 at 6:33 am
What happened with Basic Instinct 2? I heard rumours it was going to be made … then the next thing I hear is that it flopped. Did they just totally forget to advertise it or something?
December 28th, 2006 at 7:06 am
Piracy probably is to blame. It hits poor movies far harder than blockbusters, since people will prefer to watch them in lower quality and not shell out $12. For blockbusters they’ll pay the money to get the big screen experience.

PLUS..The Fountain hasn’t even opened in most parts of the world. In Australia alone it should earn a fair bit purely on the fact that it has Hugh Jackman in it.

[...] ScreenHead chronicles the Biggest Box Office Flops of 2006 with Poseidon posting a $100 million dollar loss. Didn’t see it, but I took evil glee in finding liberal wacko Sean Penn’s All the King’s Men on the list of losers. The Phat Phree gives us The Fifty Worst Hairstyles of All Time, and there’s some howlers. The Van Winkle, The Samoan Q-Tip and the Clown Skullet have nothing on The Donald. For my money, the outspoken billionaire can keep the throne. And finally, A.V. Club’s Worst Band Names of ‘06 has some real gems (warning: site contains reams of foul language). My favorites bands include: Green Milk From The Planet Orange, Cute Is What We Aim For, Bodies In The Gear Of The Apparatus, Sorry About Your Couch, and Mood Syrup. Just one more proof of postmodernism’s insideous drag. [...]

The number one reason I don’t buy new DVDs or go to the movie theater a that much is I don’t know when a movie is “done” anymore. First you go to the theater and see the movie then out comes the DVD with “new never before seen footage”, then another DVD with more and another…..all I want is something like windows pay full price one time and “upgrade” to the newest version as it comes out. naa that wouldn’t work :

Reading some of the earlier comments brings to mind a broadcast I saw some years (20+?) ago of Adam Smiths Money World featuring Cannon Pic. execs Golan & Globus. They stated that one would have to be a fool to lose money on a pic. That any film will eventually make money, regardless of initial box office receipts. They was referring to ancillary markets both foreign and domestic like satellite distro to hotels, etc; hbo, vhs/laser discs (remember them?). Of course additional markets have since open up (DBS for one). One of the key points made was producing he film for the “right” amount of $ for quicker profitability.

[...] Now I’m not gonna lie, we were in a bit of a hurry, so we were a bit short. But cut us some slack, how many podcasts do you listen to that didn’t miss a single week over the holidays? We did hit up some of the least profitable movies from 2006. The Fountain makes the list, though I attempted to argue it was somewhat unjustified. It’s not every day you have do all the preproduction twice. I’ll tell ya, that magazine sure comes in handy. We also talked a bit about what we might like to try in the new year. We came up with some good stuff, but if you have any ideas, by all means, don’t hesitate to share. [...]

[...] Although The Fountain was one of the biggest flops of 2006, Darren Aronofsky is set to dive into his next project. Despite rumours that he was intending on filming adaptations of the Japanese tale Lone Wolf and Cub, or Theodore Roszak’s novel Flicker, Aronofsky is now attached to film Black Swan, according to Vareity.
