Luc Besson’s Arthur and the Invisibles has been removed from consideration for Best Animated Feature Film by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. While initially featured on the list of 16 animated films to be considered for a nomination, Besson’s film was politely asked to leave the party, when it was decided that it didn’t meet the requirements to be considered an animation.
Officially, at least 75% of the films running time must contain animation and Arthur and the Invisibles mixes live action scenes starring Freddie Highmore and Mia Farrow with animated scenes set in a fantasty world in their garden. I think. (trailer here).
This has major Oscar implications. If a category had 16 films eligible for consideration, the Academy can name up to five nominees, but now there are only 15 films eligible there can be only three films nominated. Why this is we don’t know, but it means at least one other film will miss out come nomination time.
The remaining 15 films are:
Cars
Ice Age: The Meltdown
Happy Feet
Over the Hedge
The Ant Bully
Barnyard
Curious George
Everyone’s Hero
Flushed Away
Monster House
Open Season
Paprika
Renaissance
A Scanner Darkly
The Wild
Popularity: 1% [?]

Seems ludicrous that Arthur and the Invisibles would be excluded while A Scanner Darkly remains. Scanner was rotoscoped (which is basically tracing over filmed footage). At least Arthur was actually animated.
My vote is for Monster House or Happy Feet.
