Be on The Lookout for shady marketing
March 29th, 2007 in Directors, Movies
If you can cast your mind all the way back to yesterday, you’ll remember me getting all excited about the trailer for The Lookout, Scott Frank’s dierctorial debut. I believe the exact words I used were:
It looks nice and dark
Turns out I was wrong, sort of. While the trailer does indeed look nice and dark, Scott Frank is NOT a happy bunny, because he feels Miramax have misrepresented his film with the trailer and poster (above). He told Slashfilm:
We HATE the trailer. The trailer is NOT the movie, and neither is that (pointing to the poster). All morning I’ve been having chats with the folks at Miramax marketing, telling them that the feedback without question - now we’re laughing because we hear the same thing with every interview people come in and say ‘Boy, I wasn’t even looking forward to seeing that movie because I thought it was going to be this kind of movie, NOT that kind of movie.’ And I keep telling them (Miramax) that. So Thank you, yes you’re right. The trailer, I wish I had more of a say, instead of just a voice in those kind of things.
Bizarrely all this inside out marketing has worked on me. I was interested before, but now I’m fascinated to see exactly what kind of film The Lookout really is.

I’m with you on that one Daryl. I thought the trailer looked good and now I’m interested in seeing what type of movie it REALLY is.

I actually liked the poster and trailer alot, but it does somewhat misrepresent what the film is. After seeing the film, I think there is some credit due to what Scott Frank has to say. The movie stands well on it’s own, and it would be a shame if it doesn’t do well due to mismarketting. I for one encourage people to see it.
