When I saw that there was indeed a short film out there called Atomic Giant Mutant Monsters Who Kill And Destroy Everything, I knew I had to try it. With that kind of hyperbole in the title, you know it’s either going to be brilliant or godawful, and chances are good that no matter which one of those it falls into, it’ll also be hilarious.
This kind of antique science fiction, which started way back in the fifties, makes a comeback here when a race of atomic mutant aliens lands in the United States and starts kicking ass on a positively epic scale. Meanwhile, the local high school running back and his best friend the fullback think they have a plan–to get to the running back’s girlfriend’s house, because she’s been, conveniently, studying giant atomic mutant monsters for some time. She even plans to major in that field in college.
Spectacularly no-budget, spectacularly asinine, and ultimately hilarious, Atomic Giant Mutant Monsters Kill And Destroy Everything is a comic farce on a scale so grandiose I’m convinced that it too was exposed to large quantities of radioactivity. I would have liked it had they inserted some stock footage of some of the “monsters” they talked about, but I can do without.
The Screenhead Ten Scale loves a good laugh as much as the next conceptual ratings system and hands Atomic Giant Mutant Monsters Kill and Destroy Everything a seven out of ten for being an unquestionable laugh riot.
