Although The Fountain was one of the biggest flops of 2006, Darren Aronofsky is set to dive into his next project. Despite rumours that he was intending on filming adaptations of the Japanese tale Lone Wolf and Cub, or Theodore Roszak’s novel Flicker, Aronofsky is now attached to film Black Swan, according to Variety.
Not much is known at the moment regarding what the story concerns. All that is reported so far is that it’s a thriller concerning a “manipulative relationship between a veteran dancer and a rival”. The title may come from the famous Swan Lake ballet, the black swan symbolising the villian of the piece.
I’m mildly surprised that Universal are so keen to get Aronofsky going again, considering the losses incurred by The Fountain. Either someone in there likes him, or else this film is being pushed forward as a by-the-numbers thriller to ensure value out of their investment. Needless to say we’ll be watching this one closely.
The Fountain is expected to make back its money with a European release this month.

My girlfriend loved The Fountain. I fell asleep. Hope the next one can reach both of us.

Darren is one of my best directors though he has produced only three movies so far - though the Fountain was a dismayal disapointment - its more of a chick flick then any form of art like his other movies. Hopefully he wont succumb to commercialism like M. Night Shyamalan

Haven’t seen it yet, but still looking forward to it. The general response seems slightly akin to the response 2001 initially got (well, minus the chick-flick claim above). Pi is one of the greatest debut films of all time, in my opinion, so I’m still hoping for the lad.
