I blame March Of The Penguins for this unfortunate trend, but suddenly penguins are cute and cool. Even Happy Feet cleaned up at the box office. Does no one remember Feathers McGraw?

Sony aren’t expecting the penguin bubble to burst any time soon, because they’re throwing the animated Surf’s Up (above) into the waddly black and white ring. Before you get angry, it will not feature the voice of Robin Williams.

It will be the world’s first penguin surfing mockumentary though, which can’t be a bad thing. With Christopher Guest and friends missing the mark recently, mockumentary is a genre that needs a fresh approach, so why not surfing cartoon penguins? Don’t answer that.

The plot has up and coming but hot headed surfer Cody Maverick (voiced by Shia LeBouf) leaving his hometown of Shiverpool (!), Antarctica to compete in the Big Z Memorial Surf Off (like a surfing World Cup). Also featuring the voices of Jeff Bridges, Jon Heder, Zooey Deschanel, Mario Cantone and James Woods, Surf’s Up will open June 8th 2007.
