A Mighty Oscar Sweep?

mightyheart.jpgHere’s a full-length trailer of one of the summer’s lesser publicised releases. A Mighty Heart is the true story of Mariane Pearl’s search for her journalist husband, Daniel, who was kidnapped while investigating links between Al Qaeda and Pakistan authorities in 2002. Anyone who heard anything about the incident knows about the fate of Daniel.

This film screams Oscar nominations. Not only is it a true story (Walk the Line, Capote) , it also deals with issues of global politics and terrorism (Syriana), and is the possibly touching story of a wife in search of a missing loved one. At the very least Angelina Jolie will get a nom.

What interests me about this film is that it’s directed by Michael Winterbottom. What I like about Winterbottom is his unrelenting desire to experiment with film. He has made a period drama, sci-fi, punk biopic, porn, and an anti-war drama. Sure, sometimese that means he misses the mark with film’s like 9 Songs, but something he’ll be spot on, such as 24 Hour Party People. The trailer does not look outstanding in any manner, but I am anticipating its release as a suitable alternative to the usual barrage of summer spectacle. A Mighty Heart get’s a not-so-mighty limited release in the USA from June 22, and hits the rest of the world from September.

I missed “Tristam Shandy” because it didn’t play in Miami Beach, and I haven’t gotten around to the DVD. Otherwise, I’ve been making it a point to see all of Winterbottom’s films and catch up with any I’ve missed. I even stayed up late to see “Jude” on cable. I will be seeing “A Mighty Heart” if I can, in its theatrical run.
